Lebanese Forces Ringtones and Logos Update
I just got an email from the webmaster of SMS.LebaneseForces.com telling me they have changed there policy a bit. In the last three days they received more than 600 orders and sent approximately 350 of them. Due to the large number of LF Members world wide & the cost of each sms, they will only send logos now and not ringtones since most of the Ericsson and Nokia phones come with built in composers and you can just input the ringtones manually. So please do not abuse this service they are offering. The guys pay for every logo they send so only request a logo if you are gonna use it.

Samir Geagea's True Condition
After 9 years in prison, many rumors were spread some were good and some bad. Some of them spoke about the release of the hakim and some spoke about the bad situation that the hakim is facing. This is where we should corerct a few points.

1- Every Tuesday and Thursday the hakim is visited by his wife Sethrida Geagea, his mother (Marie Geagea), his father (Farid Geagea), his sister (Nauhad Kayrouz) and his nephews (Paul and Peter Kayrouz). Only them and no one else can see him, unless its the Bishop Al Baysari who visits him once a month.

2- Samir Geagea cannot receive any political news. He receives The Economist , Al Shabaka, Naturelle and he can have any history book which doesn't contain political news about Lebanon.

3- What are the new things that have changed with the hakim? The only new thing that changed from 9 years till now is that the family is now able to see him for one full hour every Tuesday and Thursday (It used to be 30 minutes before). The family is also offered coffee or water and are treated better than before.

4- The hakim is located on the thrid floor underground. When his family goes to see him they are taken down to the 2nd floor underground and the hakim is brought up one floor from his jail cell to see them. The room they see him in is small but its better then before. Before the room was even smaller and we had glass dividing the hakim from us. Now the room is bigger then before and we are allowed to touch him.

In conclusion, every news or story different from what I have just posted is untrue and just a rumor. This is Samir Geagea's True Condition.

Samir Geagea to be released June 10th??
We have just received the following information from a reliable source. This information may turn out to be untrue since we can't confirm this.

This is what we were told:

- they have been treating our leader Samir Geagea extremely well lately. A lot better then ever before.

- some people who work very closely with Michel el Murr and that have nothing to do with any political party have told us that on June 10th Samir Geagea will be released from prison.

- some Lebanese Forces members were allowed to visit Samir Geagea in prison

- Setrida Geagea was spotted at Aishti purchasing 7 men’s suites

Again, this information is from a reliable source but it may turn out to be either blown out of proportion, not true at all or very true in fact. There is no way of confirming this at the moment.

Geagea's Prison Conditions Reported Improved
Samir Geagea's prison conditions at the defense ministry compound in Yarze have lately been improved, An Nahar said in a 12-word news tidbit in Arabic Tuesday, giving no further details. Several human rights organizations at home and abroad have long protested the harsh treatment the commander of the Lebanese Forces has been getting since he was held in solitary confinement in a windowless underground cell since 1994.

LF activists have recently marked his ninth year in prison by rallies calling for his release as a precondition for genuine national reconciliation in Lebanon to bring down the curtain on the fallout of Lebanon's 1975-199 civil war once and for all. Some 60,000 signatures have been collected in less than two months for a public petition calling for Geagea's release either by a presidential parole or an amnesty bill in parliament.

Fist Fights Mar La Sagesse-Sporting Basketball Finals
Lebanon's 2003 basketball playoffs have gotten to a tragic start. Leading clubs La Sagesse and Sporting clashed in fist fights peppered by below-the-belt shouting abuse at the opening game of a 5-match finals Monday night, throwing the rest of the playoffs in doubt. Sporting was leading 34-33 just two minutes and seven seconds from the end of the second quarter when violence erupted at the Fouad Chehab playgrounds in Jounieh, sparked by obscene gestures from Sporting's American coach Scott Fields in the direction of La Sagesse President Antoine Shweiri , An Nahar reported Tuesday. The first quarter was 22-9 for Sporting.

President Assad says Syria won't stay a single additional day in Lebanon if the majority of the Lebanese people branded the presence of its army as occupation. Assad emphasized that Syria viewed Lebanon as an independent state, asserting, too, that the threat of a new Lebanese civil war was over and out.

Hanna Challita released after being held for a week in Syria
SOLIDA reported yesterday that Hanna Youssef Challita, who was arrested at the Syrian-Lebanese border on the 11 of May, had been released last Sunday night, the 18 may, after being held by the Syrians authorities for a week. Hanna, who has already spent 8 years in detention (from 1994 to 2002) without sentence or trial at the Ministry of Defence in Yarze for his presumed implication in the murder of Tony Franjieh in 1978, was going to Damascus from Beirut for a visit when he got arrested. No explanations for the reasons of the capture of Challita by the Syrians were given... As if in a country like Syria we needed a reason to arrest someone... What’s more important, the Lebanese authorities didn't do anything; isn’t he a Lebanese citizen? I wonder what happened to our rights, as citizens, and human beings, and to their duties, as “our” leaders (if I can call them like that), another type of human beings…

LF-AUB Conference: No National Reconciliation without Geagea
"Geagea ‘key’ to reconciliation" was the main title for the conference held by the Back To Roots Club on Wednesday the 21st in AUB . The lecture room was almost full while people were still coming in , presents at the conference were LF responsibles ( Fadi Shamati , Sou3oud Bou Chebel , Eliano el Mir , Teddy Abou Rjeily etc ... ) , LF students from all universities and AUB students from diverse political affiliations .
Quick Summary of the conference:

Then ex-MP Edmond Rizk and Journalist Georges Nassif speeched explaining that Dr.Geagea's release is a must to start a national reconciliation ; and that this man , as Nassif quoted , is being held responsible for all the atrocities of the Lebanese war and he continued saying his case is one of a flagrant injustice .Edmond Rizk attacked the current government and argued they were acting against National reconciliation and called them traitors , mainly the President of the republic Emile La7oud that has been unloyal to his promisses , He argued that Hakim is being deprived from his most basic rights and called for his immediate release .

Dr. Samir Geagea's Freedom Set as Precondition for Lowering Curtain on Civil war
Calls have rung out loud from an AUB seminar for the release of Lebanese Forces commander Samir Geagea as a precondition for a national reconciliation that would genuinely lower the curtain on the 1975-1990 Lebanese civil war. The behests were made by attorney at law Edmond Rizk, a former Phalange Party member of Parliament, and An Nahar's editorialist George Nassif during a debate held at the American University of Beirut's Assembly Hall Wednesday, An Nahar reported on Thursday.

Mourners outraged at army’s funeral harassment
Bsharri residents were “angry” after the army arrested 10 university students affiliated with the banned Lebanese Forces (LF) after they participated in the funeral of a colleague in the town of Bsharri, a member of the group said Wednesday. They were all released later the same night, he added. The group was attending a Mass to pray for Toni Keyrouz, aged 23, who was shot dead in the United States during an armed robbery. Some 3,000 people from the town of Bsharri, hometown of both Keyrouz and detained LF leader Samir Geagea, attended the Mass in the town’s biggest church, Saint Saba. Those paying their respects included friends of Keyrouz and LF members. A large convoy of cars took Keyrouz’s body Tuesday from Saydet al-Maounat Hospital (Our Lady of Salvation) in Jbeil to Bsharri.

Geagea ‘key’ to reconciliation
National reconciliation will never be reached unless jailed Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea is freed, political analyst and writer George Nassif said Wednesday. Speaking during a conference at the American University of Beirut (AUB) on the relationship between Geagea’s freedom and the achievement of national reconciliation, Nassif reminded the audience that Geagea had considered him an enemy, adding that “this is the reason I want Geagea free.” Nassif said that he himself had been one of the leaders of the National Movement in 1975, widely known for his left-wing affiliations, and that he had been wanted dead or alive in LF-controlled areas. Nassif said that even if Geagea, the only warlord tried and jailed, was part of the “dirty war,” there were others who also took part in that war, and he should not be held solely responsible.

The Covenant: Love and Death in Beirut
Thanks for those of you who emailed me the name of the book. The book turned out is called "The Covenant: Love and Death in Beirut". Here is a brief description:

"In 1980, writer/producer Newman went to Lebanon for the first of several reports for ABC News's 20/20 . There she met Bashir Gemayel, the charismatic Christian leader who was struggling to unify that country. This book interweaves their growing love affair with Gemayel's election to the presidency in 1982 and his brutal assassination that same year. While Newman claims a mission of conveying to the American public the political importance of Gemayel's leadership and death, this is frustrated by her descriptions of her love for the man, her hatred for his killers, and her fear of Lebanon's continuing violence and disorder. While some readers may enjoy this lively mixture of politics and personality, those who want clearer understanding of Middle Eastern issues will be impatient with the personal intrusions."

Taken from the DailyStar: Ramzi Irani Mass
More than 3,000 mourners commemorated the first anniversary of Ramzi Irani’s death Sunday, the last victim of a series of unsolved slayings that shook the country last year.

The ceremony, which took place at Saint Georges Cathedral in the Beirut Central District, drew a large number of mourners and Lebanese Forces supporters to the two-hour service. Speakers refrained from political rhetoric, but a solemn atmosphere dominated the service as investigations into the LF official’s slaying remain pending after a year.

Energy and Water Ministry director-general Fadi Qmeir represented President Emile Lahoud and Monsignor Khalil Abi Nader represented Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir. Zahle MP George Kassardji, Baabda MP Antoine Ghanem, and Maronite League president Hareth Shehab were also present, as were Sethrida Geagea, the wife of imprisoned LF head Samir Geagea, and ousted Metn MP and opposition figure Gabriel Murr.

Un An Déjà

Germany's Meeting: Promising results
More than 200 partisans of the Lebanese Forces met last weekend in Düsseldorf, Germany. They members came from various German and European cities and debated subjects of the moment.

Mr. Elie Baraghid, member of the political council of the Lebanese Forces, made a detailed analysis of the political situation of the Middle-East and it's impacts on Lebanon. He, once again, confirmed the will of the L.F. to continue the political struggle in the total respect of the ideas and the command of Doctor Samir Geagea.

Then, an assessment of the year 2002 - 2003 was made putting the accent on the various achievements of the L.F. lasting this period. The meeting was then followed by a mass. The prayers and the wishes were turned over towards the political prisoners in Lebanon and in particular Dr. Geagea.

The Lebanese Forces thank all the comrades who went to this meeting as well as the organizers who tried hard to make this event as a success.
