Wa Lil Chahadati Kawafil Kawafil
"An Nanssa Lan Nanssa.." This quote is the essence of our cause and our struggle as Lebanese Forces. Our martyrs died for us to live freely and for us to praise them and live to their memory. The Greatest of sins is to forget them or use their names for political or other selfish purposes.

This Year, and like every year, The pro-Lebanese Forces league Rabtit Ilige, is organizing a mass in the memory of the martyrs of the Lebanese Christian resistance on the 21st September, 2003 at 11:00AM, in Mayfou2, Al Kattara.

The event will take place at the St. Ilige Church, the church that has witnessed the struggle of the Maronites throughout the decades has become a home for thousands of our martyrs and a symbol of resistance for the Christians in the dark years.

Let us all pray for our martyrs on this day, and pray for the glory of our lady of Eleige.

Qornet Shehwan calls for Elias Murr’s resignation
The Qornet Shehwan Gathering ignored appeals to avoid further tension over the Bteghrin incident and called for the resignation of Interior Minister Elias Murr during its meeting Tuesday. Metn MP Nassib Lahoud’s car, in which his wife and former MP Camille Ziadeh were traveling, was attacked Saturday on its way to Bteghrin, an act that has been condemned by officials and the public alike. The opposition group blamed the interior minister for “not being able to provide security even in his own town,” and for “covering up for the true assailants.”

In a statement following its meeting held at its headquarters in Qornet Shehwan, the group called on the government to dismiss the interior minister from his position or face resignation itself, especially if it supported Murr. The meeting, scheduled before the Bteghrin episode, was attended by all members of Qornet Shehwan, who were prevented from reaching the residence of former Metn MP Gabriel Murr in Bteghrin on Saturday by gunfire from supporters of his brother and rival, MP Michel Murr. The statement said that “condemnation of government officials for what happened was not enough,” and that they should take immediate measures and not be satisfied with expressing their dissatisfaction at the incident. The statement said that the authorities, meaning Elias Murr, did not arrest the persons who were really behind the assault and instead detained people who were not responsible for the incident. The statement also said that the office of the state prosecutor did not take action immediately Saturday afternoon, which proved that authorities were not serious in dealing with the issue. “Avoiding punishing the real culprits and covering up for the real instigators, who are known to everybody, means that all government officials are partners in the incident,” the statement said. Leaving the meeting, one group member, Samir Franjieh, refused to comment on Michel Murr’s statement denying that the incident had taken place.

“It is not worth commenting on what he said because everybody knows the truth from a fabrication,” he said. As for allegations that President Emile Lahoud refused to welcome Michel Murr in Baabda as part of their regular Monday meeting because of his “annoyance” at what happened in Bteghrin, Franjieh said that what the president did was “a good thing.” Qornet Shehwan also discussed other issues during its four-hour meeting and criticized the government for its positions on the issue of quarries and the embezzlement scandal related to Al-Madina Bank.

Gunmen fire machine-guns at N. Lahoud
Gunmen with blazing assault rifles prevented a motorcade of prominent politicians opposed to president Lahoud’s regime from reaching a banquet thrown for them in Btighrin, the hometown of the president’s son-in-law, Interior Minister Elias Murr.

Presidential aspirant Nassib Lahoud said the assailants fired machine-gun fire above his head, and those with him in the motorcade, including his wife whose sister had been married to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Abdullah.

The Qornet Shahwan coalition of Christian opposition leaders demanded the dismissal of Elias Murr, holding him and his father Michel Murr responsible for the shooting incident.

The interior minister deplored the attack as an offence to his position in the government, saying he had ordered 300 heavily-armed policemen to deploy in Btighrin and its environs and arrest the culprits. He asserted that five suspects have been detained.

The opposition lunch was held at the invitation of Interior Minister’s Elias Murr’s uncle Gabrielle Murr, the staunch enemy of his elder brother Michel Murr who won a bi-election for a parliamentary seat in June last year which was later annulled along with the shutdown of his MTV network.

Minister Murr admitted to reporters after the Btighrin incident that the war between is father and his uncle had “ruined the Metn district” and vowed to stop it at all costs even at the risk of a clash with his father.

Hawi Briefs Sitrida on Effort to Ease Her Husband's Plight
Communist Party ideologue George Hawi has confirmed that he was seeking to improve Lebanese Forces commander Samir Geagea's prison conditions at the defense ministry in Yarze and has approached Syria about it. "I have heard a contention in Damascus that this is a Lebanese domestic affair within the jurisdiction of Lebanon's government leaders and the judiciary," Hawi said in a statement carried by An Nahar on Saturday.

Hawi said he had been urging government officials in Beirut to ease Geagea's nine-year plight in solitary confinement at an underground dungeon in the Yarze compound, asserting that improvement of the LF leader's prison condition would be a step toward his eventual release.

An Nahar said Hawi would call on Mrs. Sitrida Geagea at her house on Monday, presumably to update her on the developments of his initiative.

George Hawi Wants Geagea Above Ground
The former head of the Lebanese Communist Party, George Hawi, has taken up a determined initiative with Syria to improve the prison conditions of Lebanese Forces commander Samir Geagea at the Lebanese defense ministry compound in Yarze, An Nahar said Thursday. It quoted Akhbar Al Yom local news agency as saying Hawi met early last week with Geagea's wife at the request of an unnamed high-ranking Syrian official, during which Sitrida Geagea made only one demand; the improvement of her husband's treatment in jail.

Mrs. Geagea specifically requested that her husband be taken out of nine-year solitary confinement in an underground Yarze dungeon to the same room above the ground where the former LF chief of Staff Fuad Malek had been held, complete with newspapers, radio and television sets. Hawi conveyed Mrs. Geagea's demand but could not yet obtain a clear Syrian response that would enable him to carry good news back to her, the agency said, according to An Nahar.

"Yet she has been seeing a flicker of hope at the end of the tunnel since Patriarch Sfeir told her that she would henceforth be able to see him and talk to him twice a week in Yarze without a watching guard or a glass barrier," the agency said. It also said that Samir Geagea was allowed for the first time in nine years to see his two nephews at his jail cell last week. "Most of the conversation revolved about the Internet technology wonder that Geagea hasn't seen, yet." George Hawi led the Lebanese Communist Party during Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war. His militia fought within the Muslim camp against the LF, which then was the Christians' major militia.

    Lebanon holds 5 'terror' plotters
Five people were arrested Monday allegedly plotting to carry out attacks on Western targets in the country, the latest in a series of blows it says it has dealt to "terrorist" groups. In a statement, the Interior Ministry said it had arrested a group of five people who had been trained in a Palestinian refugee camp that is home to a range of militant Islamist groups. The five were planning attacks on targets including a Western fast food restaurant in Beirut, it said.

"As the members of this group moved to the phase of preparation to carry out their criminal act, a unit ... conducted a raid on the places where the members of the group were, and arrested them," the statement said. "During interrogation, they confessed they had received training and plotted to carry out terrorist acts," it said, adding the detainees had been referred to Lebanon's public prosecutor to face unspecified charges. Lebanon, and Syria - which has ultimate authority in its smaller neighbour - face intense US pressure to root out Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas and militant Palestinian groups.

Lebanon earlier this month charged dozens of people in connection with alleged plots to kidnap the US ambassador and attack the embassy, as well as targets including Western fast food restaurant that have been hit by a string of bombings.

Bashir Gemayel's Son Picks up Political Mantle
In a campaign to assert himself as the heir to his father's mantle, Nadim Bashir Gemayel made a tumultuous visit to the Association of Assyrian Youths in Ashrafiyeh, calling for an end to Lebanon's brain-draining emigration of younger generations and a nation-wide endeavor to lure back those who have already left. "There is a dire need for the return of our young dynamos from abroad because they are essential to the reconstruction of Lebanon on new foundations," Gemayel said in a speech often interrupted by applause, An Nahar reported on Sunday. The new foundations, he said, are basically the establishment of a state that possesses its free decision-making, sovereign over its entire territory with its own forces, independent among its neighbors and powerful by the civilization of its people and the fairness of its judicial system.

The young Gemayel demanded anew that the suspected assassin of his father Habib Chartouni be arrested wherever he is and brought to justice. Bashir Gemayel was 34 when he was killed in a 1982 bomb blast that pulverized a Phalange Party center in Ashrafiyeh. The murder occurred three weeks after his election for president of Lebanon and one week before he was scheduled to be sworn in. Nadim's unfolding debut in Lebanon's turbulent politics has included a trip to Paris to meet Gen. Aoun, which was followed by meetings in Beirut with National Liberal Party leader Dory Chamoun and Mrs. Sitrida Geagea, the wife of current jailed LF commander Samir Geagea.

Amnesty Demands News of Lebanese Prisoners in Syria
The recent death of Joseph Houeis in a Syrian jail has prompted Amnesty International to demand that Damascus release an official list of Lebanese held in its jails. A statement by the human rights watchdog criticized Syria's handling of political prisoners, citing reports of "mistreatment and torture" it has received before and after Houeis' death in June. Amnesty International complained that no autopsy was undertaken by Lebanese or Syrian authorities after the death of several prisoners, which it cited by name and date of death. It urged Syria authorities to "release without delay" the names of Lebanese citizens held in its jails and to allow their relatives to visit them. Amnesty International recalled the cases of several Lebanese prisoners returned to Lebanon as corpses, with the causes of their deaths still unknown.

    Nassib Lahoud Wants Geagea Freed
Presidential aspirant Nassib Lahoud says he is against the cancellation of the 1992 general amnesty for civil war crimes "because what is required is the release of Samir Geagea, not throwing Nabih Berri and Walid Jumblat to jail, too." Lahoud, an MP for Metn who heads the Democratic Renewal Movement, also says Lebanon needs a new president, a trusted government and a "truly representative parliament" to cope with the aftermath of the Iraq earthquake.

Lahoud, a prominent member of the Qornet Shahwan coalition of right-wing Christian politicians functioning under Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir's wing, said in an interview carried by As Safir Thursday that he opposed the proposal recently put before the coalition for an abolition of the 1992 amnesty.

Bashir Gemayel's Son Thrust into the Limelight
Nadim Gemayel, son of the late President-elect Bashir Gemayel, is gaining an increasingly visible profile on the political scene, demanding in the run-up to the 21st anniversary of his father's assassination that the judiciary act to arrest the culprits. The younger Gemayel visited the Justice Palace in Beirut on Monday for separate meetings with State Prosecutor Adnan Addoum and Tanios Khoury, president of the Higher Judicial Council, An Nahar reported on Tuesday.

It quoted him a saying that he discussed with Addoum the pending case of his father's assassination on Sept. 14, 1982, in a powerful explosion that demolished the Phalange Party headquarters in Ashrafieh, only days after he was elected president at the peak of Israel's invasion that summer.

Gemayel recalled that a suspect, Habib Shartouni, was arrested and formally charged with placing the deadly explosives in the building. But he was freed when "known armed elements" stormed into the Roumieh prison in the final phase of civil war turmoil in 1990. He demanded that re-arrest and trial of his father's suspected killer.

Families urge release of relatives from Syrian prisons
The Support for Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily (SOLIDA) organization on Sunday called on Syrian Interior Minister General Ali Hammoud to release Lebanese nationals believed to be held in Syrian prisons. Recalling Hammoud’s comments to the daily An-Nahar on Saturday that no Lebanese are still held haphazardly in Syria, the group addressed him by saying: “Dozens of Lebanese individuals disappeared in areas under Syrian control in Lebanon after the dismantling of the militias (in 1991) and were later found in prisons in your country. “The secret detention of Lebanese nationals in Syria can no longer be denied, nor can its illegal nature,” it added in a statement. “It is time to turn a new leaf and agree to the demands of the families of the Lebanese detainees and missing in Syria.” Syria has released dozens of Lebanese nationals in recent years but SOLIDA believes that many others are still imprisoned there.

31 Suspects Indicted for Terror Attacks on Fast-Food Joints
Thirty-one suspected terrorists were indicted Thursday in connection with a chain of bombing attacks on American fast-food joints and foreign-named supermarkets in Lebanon this year and were committed to trial before a Beirut military tribunal on charges punishable by up to life imprisonment. The indictment was announced by military examining magistrate Riad Talieh, capping a 3-month interrogation. Most of the indicted suspects are Lebanese activists linked to Islamic militant factions operating from the Palestinian refugee camps of Baddawi in northern Lebanon and Ein El-Hilweh in the south.

Targets of the bombing assaults included branch restaurants of McDonald's, Winners, Pizza Hut, KFC and Spinney's supermarkets in Beirut, Jounieh and Tripoli. Several people were injured in the attacks, but none was killed.

Assad Issues Amnesty, May End Drama of Lebanese Prisoners
The on-off tragedy of Lebanese prisoners in Syria has flared anew Thursday, following an amnesty decreed by President Bashar Assad for crimes preceding June 10, 2003, the third anniversary of his father Hafez Assad's death. Beirut-based humanitarian organizations say they have no evidence yet as to how many Lebanese prisoners, if any, would benefit from the new amnesty that was declared by an Assad-signed legislative decree in Damascus.

Although the Syrian authorities have long maintained in public that no Lebanese arrested by Syria's secret service over the past 10 years was still in a Syrian jail, families and human rights groups insist dozens were still held there. The plight of the prisoners was recently dramatized by the hushed-up death of Lebanese prisoner Joseph Emile Howayyes in the Damascus central prison and the surreptitious whisk of the body for a midnight burial in Zahleh. Excluded from the latest Syrian amnesty decree were convicts in drugs and arms smuggling crimes as well as armed insurrections against the regime.

Geagea's Plight Debated with Britain, Amnesty International
The Lebanese Forces said Wednesday it had given Britain's Foreign Office a dossier of jailed LF commander Samir Geagea on the ninth year of his solitary confinement in Lebanon's Defense Ministry at Yarze. In a statement carried by An Nahar, LF information bureau said the file was presented during a visit to the Lebanon and Syria desk at the Foreign Office's Near East and North Africa Department in London last week. The dossier, the statement said, contained the details of Geagea's imprisonment since his arrest in 1994, when the Beirut government outlawed the LF, the Christians' major civil war militia that turned into a political party in 1990. The LF also said it had brought Geagea's plight to the attention of Amnesty International at its London headquarters and discussed with the organization's officials the "conditions of human rights and freedoms in Lebanon."

    Bomb Scare in Ashrafiyeh
Police said Tuesday they were hunting down an anonymous telephone caller who warned of a bomb about to explode at a local insurance company in the Syoufi neighborhood of Ashrafiyeh the day before. The call was made at 9 a.m. Monday and the caller said the bomb would go off at 10 a.m., prompting police to rush to the building, evacuate it altogether and use bomb-sniffing dogs to find the explosive charge. "It turned out to be hoax. Tenants were allowed to return to their apartments and the company's employees back to work," a police statement said.
