A Conference on the Taef
agreement was held on Wednesday the 22nd at AUB. More
than 150 students and personalities from inside and outside
campus showed up to the event and almost filled the Bathish
room.
The Conference started with the Lebanese national anthem
followed by a speech by the president of the Back To Roots
club. The president introduced the guest speakers Dr.
Toufic el Hindi, Political Advisor of the outlawed Lebanese
Forces and Nassir el Assaad, journalist in Mustakbal newspaper,
The president then gave the stage to Dr.Hindi.
Dr. Hindi then went ahead and explained that the implementation
of Taef should be the first thing the next president should
do and that national reconciliation is only attainable
through new and fair elections and the implementation
of the Taef agreement.
Dr. Hindi then pointed out the consequences of arresting
one of the crucial sides of this agreement, Dr. Samir
Geagea, which deeply weakened the Christian political
scene and led to an unequal balance of powers in the government.
Dr. Assaad continued the conference by also asking for
the implementation of Taef in order to reach national
reconciliation and defined Dr. Geagea’s arrest as
a political one for political purposes.
