University
students expressed their dismay over the arrest of two
fellow students for distributing leaflets opposing the
merger of the Lebanese University branches.
Communiqués issued by students of the National
Liberal Party and the Lebanese Forces condemned the
state's "habitual violation of the freedom of speech."
NLP
students slammed the state for the arrest and vowed
to continue the struggle so that Lebanon remains the
stronghold of freedom and human rights."
Toufic
Nasr and Elie Charbachi were arrested while distributing
leaflets opposing the merger of the Lebanese University
branches.
Students
of the Law Faculty, branch II, issued a communiqué
saying that a Lebanese army patrol arrested Nasr and
Charbachi and took them to the Ashrafieh intelligence
center.
Law
Faculty students strongly condemned the action considering
the arrests "an arbitrary move that violates
individual freedoms."
In
turn, LF students expressed solidarity with their
fellow students saying "the state will not succeed
in silencing the students" voice.
