The
mass held for the commemoration of the 18th anniversary
of President Bashir Gemayel's assassination turned to
a ceremony in which Kataeb and Lebanese Forces supporters
expressed their anger and dismay over the current political
situation in the country.
It was the first time since the assassination of Gemayel
that a commemoration mass turns into a human demonstration
that shows the frustration of thousands of supporters
demanding the liberation of dismantled LF leader Samir
Geagea.
Outside the Church of Our Lady of Miracles in Ashrafieh,
a 4000-strong crowd denounced the Syrian presence in
Lebanon.
In her speech, Solange Gemayel, wife of the late president,
strongly criticized the electoral law, arguing that
many Christian groups feel they were dropped out of
political life.
"We refuse that our role, or any other role in
the country, be ostracized", she said.
Gemayel lashed out at the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation,
"the station that Bashir founded" for failing
to cover commemoration masses for 18 years.
Attended the mass members of the Gemayel family, including
former President Amine Gemayel, who returned home from
France a few weeks ago after a ten-year exile, newly
elected MP, Pierre Amine Gemayel, and a large number
of officials and representatives of the president of
the republic, the prime minister and the house speaker.
